Introducing PE week: Getting the Most out of dAThis week marks the first ever Project Educate week on the topic of "Getting the most out of dA"! For this week I collected a small group of experts on the deviantART community and positive contribution. Together we will present you with articles and happenings, to inspire you and give you an overview of how you can contribute to the deviantART community.
From Monday to Saturday, each day will focus on a different topic. Topics will be introduced in an informative article. Then we'll go into it more in depth with you through interviews with gurus on the subject or through events where you get to experience the fun of contributing.
Then on Sunday we'll recap the entire week not only in a summary of articles but also in a chat event! :party:

Project Educate: Being a People PersonSo you've got the equipment, you've got the top notch camera, the lighting, the studio, the backdrop and even the perfect weather - everything you need for a portrait photography shoot right? Wrong. The key behind all photographs that contain a living and breathing subject is to have the natural look. Just like the key to a conceptual shot is having the idea, the key to portraiture photography is having the eye. Co-operative subjects help too!
I have especially found in the past, that people develop a pained and strained look on their face when the camera is pointed in their direction. Interestingly enough, it happens more often at Weddings. The bride and groom quite often develop the look that they might have when they've just finished writing out the cheque for me to photograph their big day...

Shoot Yourself: Self Portraiture Contest "Shoot" Yourself - A Self Portraiture Photography Contest
The idea is to get creative and move away from those myspace style self-portraits. Admit it, most of you did them - and fine tune your photographic skills by taking your own picture! The 365 Photography Challenge - How to Stick at itBefore I start with this article, a little disclaimer. I just finished the 365 photography challenge - known as a 'photo a day' but I blogged and took more than one photo on most days, so it was that little bit more challenging. So I'm feeling pretty smug right now, that I achieved it. But I am by no means toting myself as an expert. This is just my humble advice on how to keep going when it does nothing but rain, or when you feel like giving up.
Before 2012, some weeks would pass when I wouldn't even pick up the camera, let alone think about shots, or how to compose one. Photography still excited me, but I was lacking inspiration. So on the 2nd of January last year I decided to throw everything up in the air, and let go. That is to say, I stopped being precious about the camera (because you can't when you have to take a photo a day) and I forced myself to take rubbish shots, as well as half decent ones.

PE: dA help - in English or Other LanguagesOn a big site like deviantART you're no doubt going to come across something you have a question about or just don't quite understand. There are many channels you can use to find the answers to various types of questions - such as the +faq, the *welcome tour, the deviantART Tutorials category and the :#help: chatroom. How do you know which to use?
The best point to start with any question or problem related to dA is the official Need Help? thread. It lists all official help channels and what they can be used for. In this article we focus on the +faq - as well as places to find dA information in many other languages! Let's start with English.

Getting the Most out of dA: GroupsGroups are a platform on deviantART which allow you to share your art - what it is primarily used for. Immediately, once your art is accepted into the Gallery, your art is sent to the message centres of many members of that particular group, gaining you instant and wider exposure. However, to really enhance your deviantART experience, and to get the most out of deviantART, +Groups shouldn't, and aren't, simply used for that.
There are many roles you can play within a group. By taking up a role, you immediately get more out of deviantART than if you had not done so.

          Member
Not only do you get the chance to submit your art to the group, as a Member, you also :+devwatch: the many happenings within the group too. This means you can read about the immediate happenings as soon as they are launched through the group, such as contests, projects and more in between. As a member, seizing the
'Why is this a DD?' Why are you asking the artist?The cool thing about art is that, unlike pretty much everything else out there, it's meant to elicit an emotional reaction.
Sometimes this reaction is rage. Or something close to it.
Sometimes when you see a DD you don't like or get or something, it's doing exactly what the artist intended. But other times, it has nothing to do with the art itself. Because, you know what, we all see DDs we don't "get" every now and then. I'll say it now: I don't like every single DD that has been posted.
More relevant to this conversation, I don't get why some of the DDs that have been posted were considered featurable (which, as we're trying to get across, really means: I don't personally think that some pieces merit 24-hour massive exposure).
And I have the right to think these things.

Hello and Bonjour! :)
Let me first say that I am terrible at writing about myself! :lol:
I'm a hobbyist photographer - at the moment I'm really into Abstract and Surreal, but I like all types of photography. My other artistic interests are editing my photos, photomanipulation, graphic design, typography, web design, and 3D art. Some of those I don't do very often, but I find them all pretty interesting! :nod:
The only web design work I've been doing lately has been creating journal skins on deviantART - I've never had the opportunity to put my actual web designs online, and so skins are the best way I can do that at the moment!
How did you first get into creating Journal Skins?
I'd always been interested in creating Journal skins, and I'd known CSS for quite some time before joining dA, but I didn't have the patience to learn how to use
Not So Traditional Tuesdays #16Well, 16 of these and 52 of the other feature journals, not too bad! This wasn't something I that had I planned on doing. Originally this was just a one off article because I was bored one day, and started typing in random search words. It is still fun to do though, so I think it will keep going until it no longer is.
I like to think that the things that make one piece of art great applies, for the most part, to other genres. A painter can learn how light and shadow fall from photography, photo-manipulators can learn about composition from a great Manga drawing, and literature can give you the inspiration to try something new or take your work to the next step. You may never try all art forms you see! You can however take what you learn from them and incorporate that into your own work. It could be the difference between stagnating and that breakthrough every artist wants to find! Now on with the show!

Traditional Tuesdays #52OMG OMFG OMFG! This is week fifty-two of this little article, and I can honestly say that I didn't think it would last this long. The night I started this feature, I was bored and just browsing around the Traditional Gallery. I was finding all kinds great artwork, that for one reason or another I couldn't/wouldn't give a DD. It could be because they had a DD recently, but mainly it was for a link to go back and see what they created next, and if they took it to the next level. Now it's more for artwork that I no longer have time to DD, I can't DD everything! I still find the article fun to do, and I'll keep doing it until it no longer is.
