Gallery Makeover: Icons and Handhelds We're slowly nearing the end of this first phase of the Gallery Restructure Project which means if you would still like to give us any kind of feedback related to the Icons & Handhelds gallery structure, now's the time to do so!
Please also scroll down and see which points have been brought up by the community and feel free to tell us what you think about them.
As recently announced by $Moonbeam13 in this article deviantART will soon be undergoing a rather extensive makeover of the gallery system in order to streamline categories and simplify submissions. That will amongst others include the removal of dead categories, merging where it makes sense or simply a complete restructuring of a whole root category if necessary.
Community input is highly important for this so with this journal you have the opportunity to specifically give feedback concerning the Icons

A big thank you to my fellow judges for providing their help and also for being so incredibly fast with sending in their votes!
So not even 24h after the deadline I am proud to present you with the winners of this contest!
Before I get to that I would like to mention though that everybody did a fantastic job and even though only three people can win no work went totally unappreciated.
But I'll stop stringing you along now.

FF-02: Critique Theory + TechniqueCritiquing Systems
Here are a few techniques + approaches to improve
the quality and helpfulness of your critiques!
Critiquing could almost be an art form in and of itself! It's complex, but needs to be accessible. It can be approached from many different perspectives; there are no right answers. In essence, critique is like collaborative problem solving!
You as critic work with an artist to identify a problem (maybe one that they themselves are unaware of), then you work together to find a solution to it. They communicate through their existing body of work, and the technique they've developed or concept they've expressed. You communicate through your observations, impressions, and suggestions! This guide is designed to give you some new ideas about how you might approach your critiques from a different angle! It contains questions for you to ask, as well as tec
On the importance of submitting icons correctly. Why this journal?
The reason I'm writing this journal is because miscatting has become quite a popular practice on dA and as such it needs to be addressed from time to time. Before a new Icon-CV had been appointed (say hi to ^ValaSedai as the new Icon-CV!), I had discussed with `ClefairyKid about writing up a small journal (though likely text-wall) about the importance of correctly submitting icons and pixel art.
While some deviants may be doing it on purpose, due to the recent changes in the Fair Exposure-algorythm, a lot of you don't, which is why I hope this journal helps clear up some misunderstandings about both galleries. Most of the info in this journal caters specifically towards iconists, so iconists: welcome to you!
But even if you aren't an iconist, the information in this article will hopefully still be beneficial to you: welcome to you as well!
Reasons why submitting correctly is beneficial for you.
An important reminder...Since the last rant didn't help anyone understand the consequences of their actions...
I was very serious when I said I would not play games anymore. Again, in just the last few days, we have had an absurd amount of current members as well as potential members harass not just our admin team but random members of this group because they are mad about our rules, deviantART rules, US law, or something even more stupid.
I hate writing these blogs because this is supposed to be a positive group intended to help people. However, it is very difficult for me and the entire admin team (and now unfortunately a group of random members) to be positive or to simply operate and help people when we are being so blatantly attacked and harassed.
So, the bottom line is this:
If I or the Review Team tells you to do something, do it or stop complaining. If I or the Review Team point out and explain to you that your actions are rude and then tell you why they are rude, don't throw a mas

Daily Deviation Suggestion Drive!Back By Popular Demand!
In January of 2012, the community was challenged by `thorns to do something about their complaints on dA. Thus was born this very group! But before the group, it was just a fledgling idea on `LiliWrites's account that began with a DD Suggestion Contest. The results of that contest were overwhelming. And so, under the prodding of quite a few Community Volunteers, we're going to do it again!
UPDATE: Less than 1 week in and we've already got 100 suggested DDs and 2 accepted suggestions!! Keep up the great work guys and gals. Please remember that you need to leave a link to every deviation you suggest in this journa
Seniority Announcements - January 2013
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other
The dA commUNIty and YouThe dA commUNIty and You
When first stumbling upon deviantArt, whether 5 months or 5 years ago, we decided to join because we wanted to share our art. We wanted our work to be seen, to be appreciated, to be understood. However, it can be a long and difficult journey from obscurity into the spotlight. Many newcomers and even long-time deviants are sometimes overwhelmed and discouraged by a seeming lack of interest and/or exposure for their work. After all, that's what dA is for, right? Not necessarily - the answer to that question is a bit more involved than a simple "yes" or "no".
Society in general has become used to instant gratification. Want the new album by your favorite artist? With the click of a mouse, you've got it! Need to get in touch with your cousin who's moved to Italy? It's easy -- just Skype! The college you want to attend is across the country? No problem, they offer online courses!
You may be wondering how this is relevant to dA. Well,
November ThankstivityIt is easy to point out the flaws....
Cliques, lack of communication, bad art that gets too many views, good art that doesn't get enough views, crappy DDs, and on and on and on. The complaints people have about deviantART could fill a book the length of the Bible, but November is a month for remembering what we have to be thankful for and so I challenge you, Solutions Seekers, to take a look around and find at least three things about deviantART that make you thankful for the community.
Create a deviation or journal that explores at least three reasons you're thankful for deviantART. It can be anything from tutorials and other resources to friends you've made to great art you've stumbled across to a favorite group. Whatever it is that keeps you coming back, I want to know about it.
One entry per deviant.
For this challenge, no mature content please. Let's make

PetalsThe grass tickled between her toes as her father toiled away with the roses by the letterbox. She watched his fingers weave between the thorns to pat the soil around each bush, humming to some John Lennon song she couldn't put a name to. Despite the sun just tipping the horizon, she saw sweat prickling his brow and his eyes squinting against the light. The fine lines on his face were suddenly accentuated by shadow, and for a moment, she swelled with wonder.
'Maria, come here,' he said, waving her over. 'You're not going to learn anything sitting all the way over there.'
Excitement sparked her limbs into motion, and she crawled over to sit next to him, careful to tuck her skirt beneath her thighs to avoid the dirt.
He picked up a pair of clippers from beside him. 'Now, you need to snipe back these diseased parts here and there from the base of the plant. It helps it grow better.'
Snipping off two pieces of wood with ease, he deposited them in Maria's outstretched hand. Their rough textu
