Disappointment of the Century

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 22, 2012, 3:26 PM
If you don't want any spoilers about SS, please stop reading now!!!

So I finally got around to finish Skyward Sword. Ironic that it took me so long since I got it like five days earlier than the whole of America and still three days earlier than the rest of Europe but a little while before the boss my interest just totally declined. So it collected metaphoric dust for a few months in my Wii until I picked it up again today.

First of all: When I finished off Demise I was like, what, seriously? That's it??? THAT was the epic boss of the game? I mean okay, he does indeed look pretty cool (like a weird mixture of Nosferatu Zodd from Berserk and Akuma from Street Fighter xD) but it's like they squeezed all the coolness that was missing from the rest of the bosses into this one instead of spreading it a bit more equally. And then he was easy as sh*t. I thought I didn't see correctly when the credits started because I kept hoping he'd jump out at me again so I could fight some more. But nothing.
And then the credits themselves, which started out very nicely with the retelling of Zelda's part of the story, became rather crappy through very choppy "camerawork".

All in all the game was a huge disappointment. Well okay, I shouldn't be all too hard on it. There were parts I really enjoyed like the overall dungeon design for instance. The Ancient Cistern alone was epic to no end and the same goes for both Fire Dungeons.
I also really liked the Ancient Harbour Area with the Skipper's Retreat etc. The atmosphere there was beyond awesome, I've rarely experienced such a sad and melancholic atmosphere in a game. The great music was the main thing that made this area into what it is.
Then the Silent Realms. Now THAT was cool stuff. I think I almost pissed my pants in the first one when the Guardians started to come for me and the light flared all threateningly. :XD:

But leaving all that aside, I don't have any special memories of the game. It's like it felt too bland to leave a big impression.
Apart from the giant annoyance that is Fi. :paranoid:
Seriously the game takes you for a complete retard. Not only because of Fi, also because of too many explanations in general. I mean wtf, so Ghirahim explains his ultimate move the last time you affront him so you know exactly how to avoid it??? That's a joke, right? /sad laugh

For me Skyward Sword does and probably always will rank lowest of all 3D Zeldas and even lower than some 2D ones.
I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with me, it's just my own opinion. If you disagree, well that's fine, I'll accept it, so please also accept my opinion and don't get rude. ;)

Haven't finished the game myself (though I don't mind being spoiled of what's gonna happen).
From what I've played that you have talked about, I must agree xD

Fi is way too annoying. I found myself ignoring half of her calls because the game got me used to Fi saying "master, you have few hearts left, be sure to replenish your health" and "there might be a ?? persentage probability that Zelda might be here." Then when I've actually asked for help, she's never given me anything that actually helps me.
The best partner I've had from the few Zelda games I've played, has been Midna from Twilight Princess. She at least didn't speak as much, and had attacks of her own.

Another complain from me, is that a good amount of my time spent on that game is flying in the middle of nowhere on the back of that slow bird of mine.
The sky is mostly a bunch of little floating stones without much to see. I would have liked to see more that I could explore. Not really sure if it just feels that way to me, or if it actually has less places to explore on than other games. Not sure if I'm explaining it well.

Yeah Midna was much better. Even though what I didn't like about her is the fact that she didn't really give you any info about enemies. Navi would always give you the name and a small tip, but Midna wouldn't even tell you the name. :(

Oh and I totally agree about the sky. It was sooo small, the vast and endless sky feeling totally didn't come up and it was indeed so empty.
I also think that there were way too little people living up in the sky. It seems...unlogical.

FINALLY! I really do like Skyward Sword, but it's refreshing to finally see someone who isn't proclaiming that it's the best Zelda game ever. Personally, I thought the ending was great (especially the fact that it finally revealed the origin of Ganondorf), but my problem with the game was the buildup to it. In my opinion, the Zelda series hit a complete storytelling high with Twilight Princess. That game and its characters had a dramatic weight that a lot of other games in the series didn't. It just had this massive, cinematic feeling that made it truly feel like a huge adventure. I think Skyward Sword was missing that. It felt like every other game in the series. I liked the advancement in motion controls, but story-wise, I think it was a big step down for Zelda.

...sorry for my ranting, I just like talking about this stuff.

don't apologize ^^

I agree with you, the story did feel very bland and superficial, it didn't feel as riveting as TP or MM at all...

Yay! MM FTW!:D

I found Demise quite hard, though.^^; I had to use a potion...I guess I suck at Zelda.:iconemoluigiplz:

Uhm what else is there to say? Oh yeah Impa and the old woman being the same person was a great twist! I thought I'd hate Groose but I loved him by the end. SS Zelda was my favorite Zelda incarnation. Involved deeply within the plot, a typical, humble teenage girl personality was a nice change.:) Love Ghirahim, for lots of reasons. And I love Link in this game, he's always showing emotion and stuff. I still prefer Young Link of MM mask though. That boy was the perfect Link to me always :')

Although TP has Midna and better combat, I gotta give the edge to Skyward Sword.:XD: I just loved cruising the skies, Link's sarcastic personality at times, the minigames, the lack of Zant, the items (the beetle was a sweet inventions), and the mini sidequests (getting Peatrice to fall in love with you was such a great reward in itself).

But really, what was with SS's ending? T.T Zelda just says she wasn't to live there and Link smiles?! Is he gonna live there too? do they get together? What about Gaepora?!

Oh my sooooooo sorry for how long this is!

oh I used a potion too for demise but he was still too easy

haha I totally grew to love Grosse too even though I found him very creepy in the beginning. :XD:

I just can't put it above TP though. ^^
TP just has this amazing atmosphere, so many great sidequests and minigames, the cinematic storyline, the freedom, etc etc.

He's even easier if you use the bug net, since it reflects his lightning shockwave back at him.:XD:

So are Groose, Link and Zelda living down below? I can't explain why but I found that part of the ending a little sad.

And the Midna.:horny: So what did you think of Zant?

oh rly? xD I gotta try that haha ^^

yup I also found it a little lazy that they left that so open. :/

Zant was okay as long as he was cool and mysterious but once he went all insane and psychotic...I dunno...
that took away the evil aura and simply made him a weird madman xD

Yes!:XD: I think it's some new tradition Nintendo are starting. Useless items become powerful final battle tools. Like in TP if you use the fishing rod Ganondorf won't attack you. xDD

Yeah I really didn't like that part of the ending. >.>

It was his bean head that ruined it all for me. A guy with that shape head cannot be a villain.:XD: Speaking of such, towards the end when Ghirahim was trying to resurrect his master, I briefly thought he meant Ganondorf. I was like "nononon, please no! We've done this (somehwhat) in MC and TP already!":XD:

hahaha yeah the head xDD But that's also why I liked him better before you fought him in the Twilight Palace, because then you just saw his mask or his mouth at the most which made him super creepy with the sharp teeth etc. But once he took the mask off he looked weird. >.<

Oh I'm glad too they didn't add Ganon in this Zelda. That makes... hmmm I think 3 Zeldas without Ganon/Ganondorf ^^
